Dialects of English in computer games

Tato bakalářská práce se zabývá analýzou anglických dialektů, které se objevují ve videohrách. Jejím cílem je analyzovat použití různých dialektů v sérii her Grand Theft Auto. Teoretická část je zaměřena na poskytnutí potřebných konceptů souvisejících se sociolingvistikou, rozmanitostí jazyka, dialekty, akcenty a herním průmyslem. Praktická část je zaměřena na jazykovou analýzu anglických dialektů, které se objevují v sérii her GTA. Tato analýza identifikuje dialekty postav ve hře z gramatické a fonetické perspektivy a vysvětluje důvody, které vedly tvůrce hry k výběru těchto dialektů.
Fairytales about selfdetermination.

In my bachelor thesis I present a text named Tales from Beztrudy land in an author book. It’s 12 stories about Lutynka and Hynek living in an abandoned narrow gauge railway near a train station in a land called Beztrudy. They live with eighteen dogs, with a cat without one leg Prlenka, with half dog half fox Bařinka and one domesticated bird. Together with their friends, they face everyday problems (getting food, changing seasons, growing a group of dogs, bottling honey, going to the ball, etc.), as well as traumas, social abnormalities, problems with the dominance of the powerful or the absence of a stable background for life. The setting of the stories - Beztrudy is a paraphrase of the Beskydy Mountains, which are the main inspiration for the stories. The goal of the thesis was to create an ecofeminist text similar to fairy tale series, which would thematize non-hierarchical interpersonal relationships, the relationship with nature or coping with abandonment. In the text part of the thesis, I also deal with the role of dialect in society or when working with language. Furthermore, I thematize here the eternal struggle to preserve the integrity of the landscape and the role of this theme in fairy tale production.
Contemporary Dictionary of the Young Generation Dialect in Hranice

Contemporary Dictionary of the Young Generation Dialect in Hranice ABSTRACT Czech is an extraordinarily rich language, our largest dictionary has approximately 250,000 words and this number also includes many more belonging to dialect groups. However, some dialect words are still not recorded in dictionaries and their use is restricted to a very narrow range of users. This bachelor's thesis focuses on dialects, specifically in the town of Hranice in the Olomouc Region. Nowadays dialects are being transformed due to several factors. This paper aims to determine whether the meanings of specific dialect words are still familiar to the young generation in the Hranice dialect section and whether these are used in their everyday speech. The theoretical part defines the basic concepts related to the dialect, the characteristics of the dialect of the area and a brief description of the history of Hranice and its surroundings. The practical part is based on data collected using a questionnaire. Yellowhammer dialects and citizen science

Bird dialects, the cultural phenomena that can be linked to migration, gene flow, speciation and cultural evolution, have been studied extensively. The yellowhammer Emberiza citrinella, a common European bird with a simple song and long singing season, has been a model species for studying dialects for decades. In this thesis, I collate several studies that benefited from citizen science approaches to push this field forward. First, we have compiled and unified information on yellowhammer dialect distribution scattered in numerous publications, and unified different dialect nomenclatures used in the past. We supplemented this with data available thanks to volunteers contributing to public databases and other online sources, and demonstrated that the continental distribution patterns of yellowhammer dialects do not support the existence of broad, geographically distinct macrodialect groups as previously believed. In 2011, as part of the Bird of the Year campaign of the Czech Society of Ornithology, we launched a year-long public awareness project "Dialects of Czech Yellowhammers". A sociolinguistic study of the New York City English and its lexis

This bachelor´s thesis investigates the lexicon of New York City English (NYCE) dialect, which results from the rich linguistic landscape of the city. Due to the fact that New York City has a long history of immigration, many exogenous words have found their way into the speech of its residents. In addition to words that have been introduced into the dialect by immigrants, the New York lexicon is also rich for words and phrases that were coined directly in the city. Previous research conducted on this topic indicated that some lexical devices used by New Yorkers are different from those used by speakers in the rest of the United States, and many of the dialect´s characteristic traits remain unique to the area of New York City. To date there has been very little recent research done on the spread of the lexicon beyond the dialectal area and the actual use of this vocabulary among New Yorkers. This thesis has aimed to fill this gap. The spread and use of the lexicon was investigated by means of a questionnaire, targeted at three groups of respondents: New Yorkers, Americans living outside of New York City and people from other English-speaking countries. The data collected from each cohort were presented, analyzed, and interpreted. The survey results firstly confirmed that New Yorkers, in comparison with respondents from other parts of the United States and with respondents from other English-speaking countries, are generally more familiar with words that have roots in immigrant languages. New Yorkers are also more likely to use this NYCE lexis in their everyday lives. Secondly, as regards the expressions that were coined in New York City, the results revealed that many of these words remain to some extent restricted to the New York City area. Finally, the findings also indicate that some of the NYCE lexis surveyed is gradually disappearing from the speech of New Yorkers and remains known and used mainly by speakers belonging to the older generation.
Linguistic politics in Italy towards minorities: present situation in Sardinia

The present bachelor thesis aims to map the linguistic situation on the island of Sardinia and the language policy towards the minority languages present there. In the first half of the thesis, I describe the minority languages spoken by the local population and briefly discuss the historical circumstances surrounding the development of each of them. I also focus on the Ligurian dialect spoken here. I also briefly mention some of the differences between standard Italian and the regional Italian of Sardinia. The second half of this thesis is then devoted to the laws that protect minority languages and the concrete steps of the regional language policy that will take to promote or revive minority languages.
Song lyrics by Jaromír Nohavica in the aspect of dialectology

The main content of this bachelor thesis is a dialectical analysis of a part of Jaromír Nohavica´s work to describe the influence of the Silesian dialect in his lyrics. The thesis is introduced with a summary of Nohavica´s life and work, followed by the theoretical part consisting of a description of Silesian dialectical features. The practical part contains tables with dialectical occurrences in all linguistic levels, their characterization and analysis supported by examples.
Selected Dialectical Phenomena in the DIALEKT Corpus and Their Presentation in Teaching Czech

The topic of this thesis is an analysis of chosen dialectical phenomena in the DIALEKT corpus and the possibilities of its presentation in Czech language lessons at high schools. The theoretical part focuses on the introduction of Czech National Corpus' spoken corpora, mainly on the DIALEKT corpus and its characteristics, however, it pays attention to foreign dialectical corpora and map applications as well. Afterwards, the distinctive phenomena of South Bohemian and West Bohemian dialectical region are described, the analysis of the data in the corpus is focused just on these two regions. The practical part is approached didactically and it consists of exercise suggestions focused on the chosen dialectical phenomena which should serve as a presentation of regional dialectical features. The aim of the thesis is to introduce the DIALEKT corpus and mainly to show, with the help of the exercises, how it could be used in Czech lessons.
How a Gypsy child can speak Gypsy

This thesis finds out Gypsy children{\crq}s knowledge of the Gypsy language in Český Krumlov. The theoretical part briefly covers the origin of the Gypsies, the history of the Gypsies in our territory, and the Gypsy language and its specifics. The coexistence of the Gypsies and the major society in Český Krumlov is emphasized in the thesis. The practical part presents the outcomes of a research which asked about the extent of Gypsy children{\crq}s knowledge of the Gypsy language. Further, the outcomes are compared with professional literature which deals with Gypsy children{\crq}s education and their knowledge of the Gypsy language. The practical part also includes information about children{\crq}s understanding the difference between two Czech words, both calling the Gypsy language, ``romština{\crqq} (a correct, neutral term) and ``cikánština{\crqq} (a common spoken term, sometimes evoking negative connotations).
